Markham Council Discussions and Actions in 2020

Following the initial discussions in June 2020, Markham Council moved quickly to initiate three essential programs in 2020.: 1) Approved a chemical treatment program (“Phoslock”) for spring 2021 that will help contain the existing phosphorus problems in Swan Lake; 2) Approved an enhanced Geese Management Program; and, 3) Approved a Park Refresh program that will include the redesign of the shoreline.

Council has asked staff to report back in 2021 on two other important programs: 1) Establishment of long term water quality goals; and, 2) A proposal for a “Park Improvement” program.

Council has asked staff to work with the Friends of Swan Lake Park and to co-ordinate its plans with the Markham Subcommittee of Council and to report back to full Council. Swan Lake Park falls within the Ward 5 boundaries of Markham, directly serving the Greensborough area, but is used by many residents in Ward 4 and by others throughout Markham.
